History , Appearance and Character

Abyssinan and Somali are considered to be one of the oldest cat breeds, althought the past is still very uncertain. It is sometimes heard that the Abyssinian descended from the cats from Ancient Egypt. The resemblance between the modern Abyssinian and the mummified cats that came to light diring excavations in Giza is therefore striking. The many images and images of cats from ancient Egypt would also have many similarities with the abyssinian and somali .
The name abyssinian is also derived from Abessinnie(Ethiopie)
The name somali of Somalia is the neighbor of Abyssinia.

The Abyssinian

Sir Robert Napier led a military expendition that returned from:
Abessinia (Ethiopia) returned to the United Kingdom in 1868. On-board of the ship was Mrs. Barret-Lennard (the Captain's wife), she brought her
own war trophy back home, a cat named Zula. Mrs. Barret-Lennard managed to make this extremely shy wild cat, with a lot to tame patience and love. It is not known whether they ever have kittens from Zula has had and Zula's only proof of existence was a stone print of 1877 and that does not have much similarity with today's Abyssinian . It is said that time British sailors brought cats from abyssinia to England. These cats horses with the English domestic cats and declared the ticked cats that were spotted at that times.

In 1877 the breed was already described in the book "Cats, their points and classifications."
But the abyssinian was only recognized in 1882, one of the first abysses registered were Sedgemere Bottle (born 1892) and Sedgemere Peaty (born 1894). They were owned by Sam Woodiweiss. His son Sydney continued the work of his father with the cattery Woodrooffe.
A male from this cattery called Aluminum (born in 1905) was paired to Fancy Fee (born in 1903). The first cats that were exported outside of the United Kingdom were Aluminum II (a son of them), and the cat Salt. They were exported to the United States. & nbsp; In 1929 Sydney Woodiweiss founded the Abyssinian Cat Club on. Names like Aluminum, Quicksilver and Silver .Memelicate that many of the first aby's were silver. But the
breeders preferred the warm game color and stopped breeding silver colors.

The Somali

The Somali story starts with a small one long-haired pussy George, he was born in 1967 from two. abyssinian parents. His breeder, Charlotte Lohmeyer gave him away when he was barely five weeks old, because he was not a good one Abyssinian was. The owner of the father of George, Evelyn Mague found this terrible and got him out of the rescue center. Evelyn realized that there are also several long-haired abyssines could arise and decided to start a breeding program. From that moment the Somalis started to emerge.

In 1972 Evelyn founded the Somali Kat Club of America and finally after a 7-year campaign the somali was recognized as a real race. Around the years 70 - 80 became the first Somalis imported from America to Europe. After much research into the origins of the somali was always repeated the same name, namely the male Raby Chuffa or Selene, born in 1952 at England, which was later exported to America.

The half-long hair gene is made up to on this day strictly withheld from; Abyssinian genes pool. After all, the medium-length gene gene is recessive to short-haired and can move for generations. Only as 2 carriers together the chance of a long-haired kitten. Abyssinians who have it carry long hairs, are called variants. Although they have each gone their own ways, the Somalis and Abyssinians know the same origins.
